Chapter Thirteen

Goldie was quiet as the scenery moved past her window.

“She wasn’t even upset that the man was dead,” Zeb muttered not for the first time.

“But where was she?” Goldie murmured.

“What’s that?” Zeb slowed to take a turn.

“Bonnie claims that she doesn’t know where LeGrand went after they argued,” Goldie reminded him. “But where did Bonnie go after they argued? LeGrand was killed in his apartment.”

“You heard her. She claims she went home.”

“And you believed her?” Goldie asked skeptically.

“It’s not my job to believe her,” he replied. “I’ll have to confirm what she said.”

“How will you do that?” She answered her own question. “You’ll speak with her family and neighbors.”

“If no one can verify what she said, Bonnie Bender remains a prime suspect.” He slanted a curious look at her. “Why do you ask?”

“I’m just trying to understand your technique,” she admitted.

“My technique, as you call it, is good old-fashioned police work.” He went silent for a moment. “Do you think she’s guilty of murder?”

“She seemed more concerned about recovering her mad money purse than about what happened to LeGrand.”

“She could be a killer who happens to like fashion,” he pointed out.

“You’ll also check with people who live near LeGrand’s apartment?” Goldie asked. “To see if anyone matching Bonnie’s description has ever visited or perhaps was there on the night he was killed?”

“No one has claimed to see anyone near LeGrand’s apartment the night he was killed. Why do you ask?”

“I was just thinking that LeGrand spent a great deal of time at the hotel during the construction,” she explained. “It’s possible that someone there knows something useful.”

“Policemen have already been sent to the hotel to speak with the employees.”

“The hotel has a restaurant,” she said temptingly. “We’ll have to eat sometime.”

“Or I could drop you off at your office and you could answer letters addressed to Mrs. Doyenne.”

“I’ve been helpful,” she argued with confidence. “I managed to find Bonnie Bender with nothing more than obscure hints regarding a snood and a women’s purse. I might be useful when you speak with the hotel staff.”

His sigh of admission brought a smile of contentment to her face. She was still smiling when they entered the lobby.

“The front desk clerk is busy,” he said in her ear.

“Jasper Gains,” she supplied as she watched the man in question respond to a hotel guest at the desk. “I was thinking we might begin with the cleaning ladies.”

“They’re a lot like servants,” he said in agreement. “People tend to treat them like furniture.”

Goldie spotted a familiar face down the hall. “There is Millie.”

“You know the staff by name?”

She didn’t take the time to respond. Her heels tapped across the tiled floor as she moved quickly to catch up with the uniformed woman pushing a cart laden with cleaning supplies. She was about to call out Millie’s name when she noticed a stack on the cart begin to wobble.

“Wait!” Goldie darted forward just in time to stop the pile of neatly folded towels from toppling over. “I got them.
